For this reading we read Dr. Nathan's fourth chapter in her book My Freshman Year. As with the rest of the book I thought it was a great read and I especially like how instead of focusing on how students acted and were similar she focused on what it was like to be an outsider in the college. She also had a first hand experience of being an outsider because she was in a different age group than the students that were usually there so it also gave her some personal insight. I enjoyed the chapter because with her focusing on different perspectives it showed how diverse these colleges really were. A part of the book that I felt connected with is when Dr. Nathan was speaking with the Japanese girl Chiho and eventually other foreign students they were talking about how Americans tend to be friendly or say things to people just for the moment and another time act like they have never seen you. I thought it was interesting because it is something that people often do. Something that made me think about is wether people do this subconsciously because they are always in constant motion and moving from one task to the next or is it because people are brought up to have an independent mindset and they are more focused on themselves than they are others.
For the second reading, The Mind at Work was a decent read but I did not enjoy it as much as I did reading Dr. Nathan's book because it felt more like a passage from a story instead of a firsthand account that I thought Dr. Nathan did well. Following with the rest of the book it was about a persons job and for this passage it focused on plumbing as a profession and some of the thought process and procedures that goes into the job.
